Review Summary

Clients report highly positive experiences with specific lawyers like Caroline McCarthy, praising professional advice, clear communication during property transactions, and excellent service for wills and document signings. However, significant concerns emerge in family law matters, with one client alleging negligence in estate administration, failure to conduct background checks, and enabling family conflict through poor management of an incapacitated parent's affairs. Another client reports questionable billing practices for estate work, where initial high charges were dramatically reduced after requesting itemization.

I have been using Caroline McCarthy as my lawyer for the past 17 years, most recently she dealt with the sale and purchase of my properties. Caroline was absolutely amazing, her advice was extremely professional and on point. I would highly recommend Caroline to anyone looking for a lawyer for any of their legal needs.

They administer my family’s estate, and in doing so displayed what I believe to be gross negligence in coercing me into allowing my sister to become sole property manager in September 2022, even though it was our late fathers wishes in mid 2021 for us to be joint. We even had EPOA’s to this effect. My mother also has advanced dementia, and the only other remaining family members are myself and my sister. I was not aware at the time that my sister had a criminal conviction from 2003 for workplace theft of $25,000 from Redwoodtown Lotto Shop (do a Google search) and Audrey Seaton did no due diligence at all to reveal this. I simply discovered it on a routine Google search of my sister’s name in 2024. Since then I have discovered what I strongly believe to be significant finance mismanagement of my parents’ financial affairs by my sister prior to her being appointed as property manager, all of which she has denied and has since completely cut me off from anything to do with my mother’s affairs, including not communicating at all about our mother’s health (she is also welfare guardian for our mother). My sister and I are currently going to court and I want her removed as property manager for my mother, and she has wasted significant funds from my mother’s estate defending her self paying for legal representation from Gasgoigne & Wicks. She has falsely accused me of all sorts of things, even of her having a temporary protection order on me, which I have no knowledge of as it does not exist (not to mention there is no rational or justifiable reason for one!). Noting that in late 2024 Gascoigne & Wicks also blackmailed me into releasing my father’s estate that was held in trust by Wain & Naysmith. All the way along Wain & Naysmith have brushed me off and covered themselves by stating it is a conflict of interest to be protecting my mother’s affairs. I believe strongly that Wain & Naysmith’s profoundly poor management of my mother’s estate was the catalyst that empowered my sister to push me entirely out of our family, with her and my incapacitated mother being the only family members left. I have made numerous attempts to reconcile things with my sister, but she has refused and has since stated she has no wish to reconcile or to allow me to have anything to do with the affairs of our mother. From my experience, you would be engaging this firm at your peril for anything to do with family law. If they cannot do a simple background check on someone with a criminal record for financial crimes when they recommend them for a financial management role that goes against the wishes of legal documents, then how are they going to manage far more complex issues? I believe that Wain & Naysmith destroyed my family. Rodger van Raalte Noting that they have somehow had a previous Google review removed. A classic case of lawyers manipulating the facts.

Tried to charge $12,000 (conveniently exactly equal to the liquid asset portion of the estate) for various tasks surrounding my grandfather's estate. After asking for an itemised invoice the costs magically dropped to a fraction of that. Watch out, make sure you understand the value of the service that is being provided or these people will rip you off without a seconds' thought.
