Reviews are sharply divided: some clients call John Porter a 'crook' and accuse him of charging $23,000 for an appeal that was legally impossible, while others praise his service, professionalism, and reasonable fees, especially for property matters. The negative reviews express anger over billing and lack of communication, while the positive ones highlight responsiveness and great advice.

Always had great advice and service from John Porter and his nice staff.
Sievwrights and John Porter are excellent in all regards. They helped me through buying my first house and charged very reasonably.
Very responsive and helpful. John Porter handled our case very professionally & prompt in taking action. Highly recommended.
Unfortunately, I had an extremely negative experience with John Porter, who, in my opinion, is nothing more than an ordinary conman disguised as an incompetent lawyer. Indeed, John Porter asked me to pay a deposit of NZD 23000 to do my appeal. However, the lawyer of the other party had to point John Porter out that you could not appeal against the decision John Porter appealed against. Nevertheless, John Porter still dared to charge me the full deposit amount of NZD 23000 for an 'appeal' that never occurred. What a crook!
To capture it in one sentence: John Porter is a crook who cannot be trusted at all. He made me pay NZD 23000 upfront for an appeal against something you could not appeal against. The lawyer of the opposite side had to inform him of this. Nevertheless, John Porter still sent me an invoice of NZD 23000. When I protested, he did not respond at all to my emails so he left me no other choice than to put in a complaint against him with the NZ Law Society. What a crook!!!
