Clients praise McClean & Co for their expertise, care, and ability to simplify complex tax and accounting matters, with one long-term client calling them the best accountants they've ever had. However, a detailed negative review describes a significant fee increase without prior notice, poor communication, withholding of data during a dispute, and unresponsiveness to concerns about a potential tax overpayment, leading to a frustrating experience. Overall, reviews are mixed with strong positive and negative extremes.

After 25 years in business I can say McClean & Co are the best Accountants I have ever had by far.
Great team who are very accurate, thorough and knowledgeable. Have been using McClean and Co for years now and couldn't recommend them anymore higher.
I love helping businesses use the technology better and get the most from it. But the numbers drive me crazy. McClean and Co help me make sense of the tax and accounting details. They care about my business, and give me super powers in something I don't have strengths in. Thanks guys
I had a very bad experience with McClean & Co accountants in Queenstown, just for my last annual accounts work they increased the fee 100% from the prior year to $2,990 (inc. GST) which I thought was very expensive and unjustified given my small company has no staff, no customers and isn’t GST registered, it’s just for share trading with brokerage statements and summarised PnL provided. Due to their use of interim billing invoices in draft accounts they provided me I had missed their huge fee increase only shown on the final accounts and mistakenly signed off on it. Their main reason for the big fee increase which I thought was ridiculous was I had given them an extra share trading statement over the prior year that contained only 10 completed trades over a 5 week period, so I decided to leave them after that as I didn’t agree with their billing and felt overcharged, they also wouldn’t show me any accounting work log after requesting it, and I was also worried about more future price increases from them as they don’t show any indicative pricing so to me they could just bill me whatever they want. I decided to dispute their final invoice of $1,265 which was on top of the $1,725 I had already paid for the annual accounts work. I also had to ask them 3 times for an explanation of an apparent error they made from that extra trading statement that caused me to overpay tax. They eventually gave me 1 short and confusing email reply so when I asked a few simple questions for clarification to help me figure out if I needed to amend my tax return to get a refund back they didn’t reply to me at all and just ignored me then kept requesting payment from me and said their only reply was “conclusive” which it wasn’t, so I was left to figure it out on my own. They also mentioned they "didn't charge me for the review" of their 1 email reply, however I wasn't offered a chance to pay for a review so I could figure out if I overpaid tax if they had to be paid to look into it. It seemed to me they ignored my simple questions because answering them may have got them to admit causing me to overpay tax and that could jeopardize their ability to bill me for that extra trading statement in question, which to me was a very unprofessional move that didn't show any accountability for their work performed. They would also sometimes take up to a week to reply to my emails. After I fired them, they also withheld my company data from me unless I paid the overdue final invoice that I was disputing, and they threatened credit control penalties unless it was paid. I told them I would pay it after they properly addressed my concern with overpaying tax, however it became clear to me they didn't want to properly explain it by ignoring a few simple questions about it that would of helped me sort it out. I was also worried they might increase the bill with credit control penalties and my credit score might be negatively affected by this if they sent it to debt collectors so I just paid them and also to get my company data back from them which they had been holding against my requests for it. So in the end, I didn't know how much tax I overpaid and if I needed to amend my tax return. I had initially called Chartered Accountants ANZ to inquire about making a formal complaint against them, however they encouraged me to try and work it out with them first, and I did for 2 months but in the end I just gave up as I didn’t have any more time for this. They did agree to cut the final invoice in half after my request to do so but they always came across as not really caring about my business nor wanting to help me resolve my concerns with overpaying tax, they were just focused on getting paid the final invoice and being finished with me. It was the most frustrating and worst experience I’ve ever had with an accountant after using various accountants over the past 14 years for my companies. I should have never signed up with McClean & Co in Queenstown for my accounting work.
